Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the UNO Department of Foreign Languages WWW page. Our department is the second largest in the College of Liberal Arts, employing 16 full-time faculty members, several part-time instructors and 5 to 7 graduate assistants. We offer an array of elementary courses in 8 languages, undergraduate courses in "romance languages", and an undergraduate major and minor in French and Spanish. We also offer a graduate program (M. A.) in Romance Languages with a French and a Spanish option, and a double track in each option, i.e. literature and language/civilization. All our majors and graduate students are elligible for yearly departmental awards as well.

The city of New Orleans' unique history and special blend of cultures offer students of foreign languages a propitious environment, particularly in the francophone and hispanophone areas. A state-of-the-art language laboratory enables our students to supplement their class work with additional exposure to the language of their interest.

The department actively participates in several UNO-directed international programs, i. e., in Innsbruck, Austria, in Montpellier, France and in San Ramón, Costa Rica. We also supervise several exchange programs; e.g., UNO - Université d'Orléans, France.

Our faculty engage in research and teaching activities around the world, from Argentina to Romania, and from France to Israel, thus contributing to the internationalization of the curriculum in the College of Liberal Arts and at UNO as a whole.
